Silpoly XL vs Xenon Wide for winter haven

    Hi,

I am about to order a winter haven on the SLD website, but I am still hesitating about the material I want on it. Silpoly XL or Xenon Wide.

The specs give the Silpoly a little advantage : better HH, lighter. But Dutch is known to be a little conservative about the specs of his materials and I'm in a little fear about the durability of the Silpoly.

It is for intensive use, while hiking.

    Thanks

I have a Xenon Winter Haven, and it's basically perfect. Besides, Xenon actually IS a polyester fabric, so I'd say it's a no brainer!

I have three Silpoly tarps and my SimplyLightDesigns Winter Haven has been through some serious wind and it looks brand new. The one thing I would get on my next Winter Haven is a middle tie out as the sides do collapse in quit a bit in a heavy wind and another set of tie outs in the middle of the tarp would be beneficial.

    Making a note of this.

I assume this was because your tie outs were wide due to the Bridge Hammock configuration.

Yes sorta but I believe a 3rd tie down (rather than a tie out) would be more beneficial but now that I think about it a 3rd tie out would be nice as well.

It was your response to my Cuben Fiber question that brought my attention to the Winter Haven.

I have been overlooking this option.

Winter Haven or Winter Palace are on the top of my list.

Winter Palace I can just order.
Winter Haven takes a little time to figure out what folks did to customize it and why.

    Silpoly XL has my attention.

However I don't understand some of the options.

For instance..... Line Locs Swap for D-Rings (extra ties)

    What does extra ties mean?

I would suggest just emailing Jared as he's great to work with and typically gets back to you within a few hours.

There is a difference.. The Silpoly XL is more waterproof than the xenon. I have both. Silpoly XL is like a freshly waxed car.. Xenon wets out pretty easy. My opinion..

We've worked with both, here is our understanding of the two and the major differences.

20d XL Sil Poly from RBTR is Sil/PU coated both sides, both sides of the fabric have the same performance specs and either side can be sealed with silicone. 2500mm HH

20d Wide Xenon from Dutch is Sil/PU coated one side and PU coated on side, both sides of the fabric do not have the same performance specs. Full PU coated side is the inner and needs to be seam sealed with seam grip. 1500mm HH

Both will keep you dry, personally I prefer the true double coated Silpolys as the fabric doesn't seem as stiff.

A XL SilPoly PU4000 (not available) would be a more apples to apples fabric to compare to Wide Xenon as it to is a PU coated fabric.

I don't understand this comment because dutch, on his site Statesbthat it is pu coated on both sides for the xenon silnwide with an HH of 4000 or more (tested). Those numbers your referenced to I believe are for the older fabric xenon sil.
