    Width of top quilt.

So looking around it seem like a pretty typical under quilt is 42+ inches, and a typical too quilt is 56+ inches. Given a conventional sleeping bag is maybe 61", that's a lot of extra material, cost, and weight. Has anyone tried a substantially narrower top quilt?

I only purchase wide top quilts as there's nothing worse for me than to be trapped in a mummy type cut. I not only get wide quilts but I also (if available) get no taper as I move my legs all night long. Check out George's quilts as these are some of the best looking and functional quilts available.

I tried wide (55") TQ's at first. I decided they were too much unnecessary material in a hammock. I've switched my TQ's to 50" width. Much better. 6'2" 220#

I agree, too much is too much, for me. I could never figure out why underquilts were so wide, but now, I think a wider bottom and narrow top is more comfortable.

I have 3 different size TQ
    20 degree is wide
    30 degree slim
    40 degree regular.
    My TQ are Enlightened Equipment

What I've learned for me is above freezing the wide 20 is too much to manage. But when it was below 20 it worked perfect over thevsmaller lighter quilts with the extra width.

The 30 slim was fine with no gaps for me. 155lbs 5'8". But the 40 regular is my fav width. No worry about too slim and not too wide it falls in on you making it warmer with the added foods like my wide 20.

Imo It really comes down to how you sleep and body size. I have a diy top and it about 58 wide at top ,I also use a sleeping bag opened up that's 63 wide at top both taper. I personally would t even entertain tq narrower than 58 but I'm wide across the chest 48-50 suit jacket and side sleep. The extra width is needed to really bundle up while on my side.
