    Baffle sewing alternative?

Forgive me if this has been proposed before, I've been looking for it in the overabundance of hammock forums mega threads...

Has anyone tried a baffled quilt using folded portions of the outer shell fabric as baffles? Like this:

A quick calculation says with something like .67 argon, on a 44x60" quilt with 4x1" baffles (purely to make the math easier) the double layer baffle would amount to a .36 ounce penalty at most. It seems like it might be easier and quicker sewing, especially for those of us with rudimentary thread injection skills.

Maybe not as worthwhile for thicker quilts or heavier fabrics. I suppose you could do the same thing with the inside shell if that was going to be a lighter fabric as well.

That looks like much harder work.

Just get precut baffles in the width you need and tape them down. Run them quickly through machine. You can do an underquilt or topquilt easily in a few hours.

IF you're able to produce the size quilt you're wanting after doing these baffles, I see no reason why this wouldn't work out just fine. FWIW, while I'm pretty good at sewing, I think it would actually easier/less measuring and marking to just use regular pre-cut baffles. You'd be surprised how easy it really is. Feel free to PM me if you would like any tips on sewing regular baffles.

Follow up to MuddyCreek: can any of the Master Thread Injectors direct me to a YouTube on how to sew the baffles in from a process standpoint- 1,2,3 steps? I recently acquired a family 1960's Singer that is a tank, and I'm thinking about biting off a quilt this fall.

That method quickly eats up the width of standard (60") outer shell fabrics.

I made a UQ for me and a TQ for my daughter using costco down throws using this exact idea. I followed the lead by GadgetUK437 and -c0de-. It was fairly time consuming, but for $20 per throw and a bit more for other odd & ends, I have a UQ and TQ for well under $100.

You CAN sew baffles in a wide variety of techniques.
The most efficient and lightest (uses least amount material) is the standard "box" baffle. Since weight, time and money are a concern to most of us, the box is popular choice. It allows for max. loft and ease of manufacture, with the width of standardly available fabrics.

It may seem daunting, but if you follow the steps shown in the diy section for quilt making it really isn't that hard. Take your time on layout, use pins where needed and take your time sewing.

I wont reference any threads or videos. You can do the research and learn the steps that will work for you.
"SEARCH" function is the first step in DIY.
