Not bad, but that is a lot of extra gear!

It's not that much extra gear. Only a ground screw and rope more than what I normally carry.

I am wondering what size ground screw the instructions are referring to? It says the setup is rated for up to 150 lbs.

I think it says the lightweight screw was used, there is a larger screw at orangescrew.com and i'd spring for two of those...ill put twenty hand-carved steaks if thats what it takes to avoid ground-dwelling! Checking the forum links posted by p-dub meow

The ground anchor needs to be quite strong. Somewhere in the ballpark of 400 lbs for my 180 lb self.

You can reduce the forces somewhat by making the upper section more vertical (e.g. anchor to a branch instead of the trunk) and making the lower section more horizontal by staking out a far away.

I was going to say that this has been around for a loooong time. I can't find the pics now, but lots of us old telco guys long ago figured we could hang from the pole on one end, and the down guy line on the other. not really a good hiking alternative, but the method has been around forever

It isnt something I would use unless in an emergency, but I dont think I would carry the ground anchor around with me while hiking. I presume thats why most people dont go for a setup like this.

Totally agree. Though if the alternative is going to ground you could be motivated to make an anchor from a large log, or use a far away tree if you had enough rope. Knowing it's an option is half the battle.
