Very interesting idea. I'm curious as to what the poles add to the chair. You don't have poles in a GE hammock and a bridge uses the spreader bars to flatten the hammock. Since there isn't much fabric in the chair it's not like you're in a deep valley and needing to keep from sinking into the chair (or at least that's what I think it might be).

Without the poles as spreader bars, the chair wants to pull your legs up to your chest. It might be a good yoga position, but it isn't very comfortable.

That makes sense. I was looking at the picture and not really considering that the entire chair is really held by two connection points and obviously they would want all the chair to be in the same plane.

I think that before you can decide what improvements you can make to version 2.0 you need to decide what improvements it needs. So..make another version 2.0 (one for you, one for your wife) and use them, alot. Take notes and experiment. That's the fun part (for me at least).

Great job! I volunteer to do a CAD drawing for public distribution if you can give me a sketch with dimensions, including length and depth of cuts. At this scale cat or circular arc are not significantly different. A pillow behind the neck is the only improvement I can think of. A variation in height/depth for different size people might make it more comfortable for different individuals.

Thanks! I'm actually pretty proficient with Sketchup, which I think is sufficient for this purpose. I just got some 1.9 ripstop to try, to see what difference fabric strength/stretch makes vs. different design details.

I love the open source approach, but I have friends and family saying, "sell your idea!" !@#$% American values. Now I feel guilty about trying to make a buck from it and I feel guilty about NOT trying to make a buck from it.

+1 for that! At my age I'm less interested in making money than just keeping the 'ole 'puter workin'.
