Wow. Glad no one was hurt. I'm pretty careful and I look thoroughly for stuff like that, but who would have known . . . I think I'll be looking harder next time I set up.

I've been thinking about this. Some trees seem to hang on to their branches forever even when dead. Balsam trees for example. Other trees like Poplar will always have dead branches on the ground around them but they are generally small. Poplar will drop something you'd throw for your dog.

If I think back, I've actually seen a LOT of large fallen branches around big oaks before and I can very vividly picture the leaves still being on them.

4-9" in diameter. The branches often bend enough that it won't lay flat on the ground. Part of it will curve up and seem almost lime some sort of hand rail. The leaves and half formed acorns at the end are now brown because the branch has fallen.

Now, I've always assumed this happened during a storm or something, but maybe this is just an Oak thing.....

I'll snap some pictures next time I see this.

Oak and beech are notorious, as are some eucalypts.
If you hang from trees with trunks the size of your thigh, they generally don't have boughs big enough to kill you.
(Doesn't stop other trees getting ya tho')

last year on the AT I ran into a guy in NH who rolled over in his tent (I know not hammock related but again the fight with gravity) to have a drink and a branch crashed through where he had been laying--that drink saved him--they call it the law of gravity but it really is a dictatorship

I am sitting in the back yard and my husband started pruning some branches. When I heard the heavy rustling of branches I nearly leaped out of my skin. Ivy the dog was cool.

That's amazing. Glad you are ok. By the way, are there monkeys where you live?

No. There are no monkeys around here. Unless they escape from some secret government lab that I don't know about.
