in my GE, I started off earlier this year with a pad, but found the difficulty of movement of the pad while in the hammock too confining, making me sleep in an uncomfortable position to avoid CBS. I have since gotten an underquilt and have tried it out in my yard with much better results. My son, who is all of 60 lbs, sleeps in his hammock with a closed cell foam pad, and loves it. to each their own.

Yes and no. I use my UQ alone to around 20°F. Any lower and than that, I throw in my Therma•A•Rest pad. It is most comfy under inflated. I don't find pads uncomfortable, but an UQ alone is more comfortable.

I'm using a Klymit Insulated V-Luxe in a Warbonnet Ridgerunner.

I hated using a pad in a gathered end hammock because it moves all over the place and falls over the edge. But i noticed if it's tapered on the foot end (as in using a closed cell foam pad and trim it down) it doesn't drape over the edge as much.
Love using an air mat in my Warbonnet Ridgerunner! It makes it more comfortable and it doesn't move around.

In a GE (gathered end) nothing beats an underquilt. But to start out, give the pad a shot.

The Terminator and I used pads when we first got into hammocks. She always had condensation issues, I just found them uncomfortable and not user friendly. We changed over to UQs and have not looked back.

Even our Dog Sam hates pads. We tried to give him one to sleep on while camping and he promptly tore it up.

I use a pad when cool nights as I do not have an under-quilt at this time, I will be expanding my pad to use in conjunction the underquilt when I get it.

I bot a DL WBBB thinking I could get by with a pad.Pad fits in the pocket just fine but I cannot stay on it.Well,I can stay on it long enough to fall asleep and then I get off it during sleep and wake up cold.Rinse,repeat.....but with an underquilt I sleep great until it slips off my shoulder and then I quickly pull it back up.Haven't quite figured out my error there............

Have backpacked about 30 nights on a Therm-A-Rest XTherm. Slept comfortably and warm. If you toss and turn a lot, the XTherm will also turn and that can be annoying. If one comes across a campsite devoid of trees, the XTherm makes going to the ground easy in that it is 2½ inches off the ground. For me the pad provides nice ground options while the UQ provides the ultimate in comfort.

On the other hand, the “wrong” pad could be a problem. The Therm-A-Rest Prolite tossed and shot me around all night. It felt like a rocket trying to escape my quilt. Got very little sleep that night.

    YMMV

If one is hiking a long trail with shelters (LT, AT, etc) packing a pad means being able to comfortably take to a shelter when the wx turns nasty. I employ both a tq and uq, but I pack a pad for this reason. I use a 40° uq for 3 season east coast hiking, and can slip the pad into the hammock mix on a cold night if needed. I did this on the AT, and will be packing a Klymit Static V2 Jr this fall on the LT to save a few ozs. Still manage a 13.8 base weight.

If that's what you have and you don't have the funds for a UQ yes. If you're handy or if you can afford one go with a UQ
