1.1 Ripstop nylon vs 1.0 oz HyperD Diamond Ripstop nylon

Another fabric question... How do these two compare for durability?
I'm planning a single layer hammock with (most likely) one of these two fabrics.

I know the ripstop nylon has been around for ages, so I'm guessing it's pretty tried and true...

Any issues with the 1.1oz HyperD?

Willing to consider upping to the 1.6oz HyperD, but I don't need the added support/stiffness (I don't come near the 200 lb weight limit on the 1.1 and 1.0), would just be doing so for durability factor.

I've ordered samples for all three from RSBTR, but I'm looking for people's experiences with these fabrics too.

    Thanks.

I really love the 1.0 HyperD. I have used a lot of the stuff and it has much better durability than 1.1 Ripstop. It has a good feel but is a little stretchy on the bias. It is also a little more challenging to sew.

If the fabric has a plied yarn it will be stronger than a non-plied.

The feel of the 1.6 HyperD is amazing. Very soft and cotton like. Not slick or plastic like at all. Regular ripstop would work, but I personally prefer my HyperD.

Kyle once wrote that the 1.1oz ripstop is more durable than the 1.0oz HyperD, since it's a 30D fabric and not 20D like the HyperD. If you are concerned about durability, I would go for 1.6oz HyperD. 1.1oz and 1.0oz fabrics simply are more delicate, and when you read about failed hammocks, it's a 1.1oz or 1.0oz single layer hammock in 9 out of 10 cases.

Even if you are far below the weight rating, it doesn't mean that the fabric feels comfortable to you. I'm only 133 lbs, but the lightest fabric that is still comfortable to me in a single layer hammock is 1.7oz. Even the 1.6oz HyperD doesn't work for me. Interestingly, a double layer hammock I made from the 1.1oz ripstop RbtR sells feels extremely stretchy in comparison with a double layer 1.0oz HyperD hammock. In the end you'll have to try each fabric to know. But I'd say the 1.6oz HyperD is probably the fabric with the best chances to work for you.

I've made a couple of hammocks from 1.6oz Hyper D. I like the feeling, but it is more difficult to sew correctly. It tends to stretch more than the regular square stuff. I tried making a rainfly from it and I couldn't get it right. The ridge seam was awful. Hammocks are a bit easier as long as you're using one piece and not sewing extra side widths onto them.
