    I agree that it's sad but it's also a teachable moment. We can explain how we use straps to protect the tree and by hanging we don't compress the ground. I know it's a stupid rule from our perspective but they are trying to protect the trees. If we can show them that we are protecting the trees as well (because without them we can't hang) it gives them a reason to modify the rules to say "hang using 1-2" tree straps (no drilling)" and we'll all be good.

    Alas, it often appears that trees have been removed to great "clear spots" for tents. One result is, remaining trees form a boundary between one camp site and another. That makes "possession" of the trees, for hammock hanging, contentious.

    Well if that's the case, I'd bring my turtle dog stand. We just did a float trip in OSR, the girlfriend and I hung all weekend. They too said that hammocks were not allowed. Park rangers didn't seem to have a problem as long as I wasn't on the trees. Food for thought.
