I was planning a hike on the LHHT and just received an email that I can not use my hammock in the camping areas because the don't allow drilling holes in the trees to hang anything! Another uninformed person making rules.

Bummer! I had my Makita all charged up and ready to go. While I was at it, I was going to bring my own drilling equipment for water too.
p.s. I had to google LHHT...man I gotta get out to PA. Lots of nice places within a decent drive.
that does sound like a very specific issue totally unrelated to camping hammocks, yet making it harder for us to hang in our favorite sites. I've heard of similar issues in other parks, but thankfully, nothing like that around my neck of the woods.
At least here in Indiana, "State Parks" have a large attendance by certain, let's say, clientele. In the Park's defense, I can say any rule like this is most likely based on crazy/idiotic things people have done in the past. I assume they think aggressively controlling certain activities is the best way to get things under control.
There seems to be some confusion here, probably on my part, the lady that answered my email is referring to walk-in camp site within the state park of Ohiopley not the LHHT. I was planning on staying at a camp grounds at Ohiopley before starting the LHHT. I'm still not sure if I want to start in Ohiopley or pay the shuttle to the other end and walk back. Leave it to PA. to regulate the easy way to enjoy yourself.
Spiguyver actually just got back from a backpacking trip to LHHT and his group (sans one t*nt) hung the whole way.

I did receive another email saying I could hang a hammock at any of the 8 campsites on the LHHT but not at the Tub Run camp grounds or other within the Ohiopley State park
Tell them you are not going to drill holes in the tree. That you are simply going to take your chainsaw and cut it down to about 7 feet high, so you can loop your straps over the top of it.
( in their defense, I'm sure they have seen someone screw eye bolts into the trees)

I received another email informing me that they simply do not have any sites setup for hammock camping and I agree.,I'm sure someone has done something to cause this attitude.Or maybe there's just not two trees on any one site! If I get to keep my plans I just won't spend the night at Ohiopley.
