Maine "Mystery" Paddle-In Hang June 8th-11th, 2017 ~~The Trip Report

"if you have the willingness to drive four hours from the Maine New Hampshire border at Portsmouth anyway, what difference does it make it exactly where you're going to go hanging... At that point it's all the deep woods, really great lakes, and mountains"...

That was the mystery part. The Where was revealed back in May to be Flagstaff Lake outside of Stratton/Eustis Maine. We had several acres of cleared woodland on a bluff above the lake with lots of tree pairs to pick from. It was a pretty easy paddle, and we had a great crowd of great people.

    Fun was what we had...
We also had severely gusting winds, a few hours of pretty heavy rain, tarps flying loose, bugz, geese, more bugs, a clear-off to beautiful weather.... and that was just Friday morning while a few of us waited for everyone else to get there.
We got it from extreme to extreme, but I doubt anybody who was there would say "no" if you told them they could have the exact!! same experience next weekend!
The totality and the site were just too fine.

I have pictures that I will be getting up, but I also have a serious case of the tiredz... everybody can add what they have>>>>

It was a great weekend for sure! Figured out how to find fat wood, great paddling, chilling out with everyone, eating too much as usual, learning new skills, seeing different hammock setups, beautiful scenery, and a slightly scary paddle home! Artgirl42 is working on figuring out getting the video she made onto YouTube and here are a few of the pictures I took. We have a ton more! We certainly will be spending more time in that area in the future. Thank you Ted for putting it all together!

I don't quite remember what that was he was eating, but it certainly was full of calories!!

    The Kludgie!!!

    GoGrillz demo!!! Thanks Alex!!

Oh, and as we turned into the parking spot at the put in, I checked my email and there was my ship notification from Warbonnet that our Wooki's were on the way! Shucks!!! It was warm though, so it was no big deal we didn't have the better insulation.

Great video! This was one of the best hangs. Wish I could have stayed another day. It was amazing the remoteness of the lake and stunning scenery.

I had a blast tooling around in the kayak on the lake! The wood processing was fun too. Never been to a HF hang where if you wanted fire you had to process all the wood. I got a sweet Japanese folding saw out of the deal, since I pestered Grey Eagle so much asking to use it every ten minutes. Thanks Roger!

Was nice to come home and get cleaned up......and discover 20 mosquito bites I don't remember getting. I didn't use a drop of bug spay or any bugnet for sleeping. I think I actually faired pretty well.

Waiting for sunset in the middle of the lake.

    Failed group pic.

My tarp pulling itself free in 20 mph winds. But look at that view!

Group paddle out to fat wood island.

Oh course I will be the first to post Bryan in a lovely pink safety device.

    No explanation necessary.

Wow! I am SO jealous I couldn- make this hang! Even my kayak is jealous! On the upside, as I was teaching at the fishing event we were conducting in Woburn, MA for the city's 350th anniversary, the State Rep and the Mayor dropped by, and presented us with a proclamation from the House of Representatives, which was read into the record on the house floor earlier. Nice to be recognized!

Also, while at the ACS Relay For Life later that evening, Ewok (Alison) won a $250 bag of great camping gear in a raffle!

So, was a pretty good day for us, even though we missed this hang. Glad it turned out so well!!!
