I've decided to try this one out and be an early backer - I agree with the concerns about not having a tarp, but on the other hand using my poncho tarp as a kitchen area/etc... ought to be workable. But having coverage and insulation in a very lightweight package is appealing if I'm only using my hammock for sleeping, like if I'm doing a very long hike and would normally just pack in a bivy.

The concept is not new. If you dig back into the archives of HF you'll find many folks have tried the 'sleeping bag around the hammock' idea.

It is not an effective method of keeping the hanger warm. The large air gaps created allow to much circulation.
    Don't be fooled, folks.
Does your jacket keep you warm if its held 6-8 inches away from your body? No.
Neither will your sleeping bag/quilt if its suspended on a ridgeline.
Insulation works best if it is close to your body.
Breathable fabric is needed to cut down on condensation build up.

Signed up for one on Kickstarter, if only to use during spring/autumn temp ranges, or short overnight walks.
    Somewhat hopeful.
[UPDATE: Bailed out, condensation is a killer in Aus.]

I see a problem using with hammocks that use tie outs: WBBB, SLD, DH, HH etc.

Watch this video by Shug https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n06cgAMNec with him using his frost bib. Now most of us won't hang in these temps, but if you did, I would think things would be pretty wet inside using this product.

I wonder if they could make one for a 12' hammock. Looking at the specs, it says 11' I'd try one if they made a longer one.
    Thanks, Joe

After bailing out I bought back in. Will put a review here after a few nights out in it, but being Kickstarter, patience is the first hurdle.

I've talked with 2 guys that came up with it and they seem like they are really interested in getting as much info/ feedback as possible to make any improvements it might need. I read both of the articles the OP listed and in one of them they mentioned that they are marketing it towards the college demographic , to which they themselves belong , allowing their peers to be able to hammock year-round. Having an all in one type system like the SHEL thats affordable, easy to use and has a temp rating of 32° or so would be exactly what a college kid with limited funds, limited camping/hiking/hanging gear and not much experience with our style of hammock - specific gear/ techniques would need to be able to hang down on the quad or on a short weekend camping trip with friends at moderately cool temps and mild weather conditions. So for that, I think it hits a home run just as long as it does what they claim . For a " serious" hammock user ( and I use that term loosely lol) idk if its even designed with us in mind. Sure we can still use it, but I don't think it was meant to be a super lightweight replacement for your winter tarp with doors and 20° down quilt set. I will be testing one this winter so we'll see just how low I can take it, how dry it keeps me, how warm I stay and how well it breathes. Should be interesting at the very least !

I did write a bit with the guys & checked the kickstarter.
    - The circulation /breathability is supposed to come from vents. However If you close them because you want it warmerinside, I assume you will have condensation buildup.
    - What I do wonder though is if it doesn't feel claustrophobic as it doesn't have tie-ous. In my opinion even a bugnet close to the face will feel quite claustrophobic, and the shel is closed.
-Also I do wonder if the rain running around the cocoon won't wet the insulation from the bottom as it may enter trough the stitching of the baffles.

I do agree that a multitool is a almost never as good as a specific tool. However I do use my swiss army knife a lot more than my bushcraft knife, and it does most jobs formidably. That said: If the shel gets some positive reviews in the forums here then I would love to try one.
