Cool DIY OutdoorINK Synthetic Summer Top Quilt ("Timbuktu")

    Type/Rating: 50-degree F synthetic top quilt
Outer Shell: RBTR OutdoorINK 0.9 oz MEMBRANE 15 poly taffeta in "Timbuktu" (Traditional)
Inner Shell: RBTR 1.1 oz ripstop nylon in Black
    Insulation: Climashield Apex 2.5
Construction: Rectangular (no taper), snap footbox with drawcord closure and security tie
Finished Size: Approx. 80" long x 55" wide
    Weight: 17.6 oz (500 grams)

I made this Climashield Apex summer top quilt as a birthday gift for my mom; it's a 50-degree camping quilt masquerading as a casual throw (as all the snap closures and cinches are recessed/hidden), made with digitally printed outer shell fabric in a pattern I designed myself, available at Ripstop by the Roll.

This top quilt is roughly the same pattern as the OutdoorINK synthetic top quilt I built previously, save for the differences described above, and it matches my DIY OutdoorINK underquilt protector in the same pattern and fabric.

Look in good. Is that a cord lock in the last photo?

Thank you, slugbait. I'm glad you like the quilt. I am pretty proud of the "Timbuktu" mud cloth pattern I designed, and I'm liking the way the bold shapes look on hammock gear. I'll be making more stuff with this pattern in the Traditional color variant.

With our typical Pacific Northwest weather, you may have the same opinion as I do, namely that a 50-degree quilt is of pretty limited utility. Here it is already June with the summer solstice fast approaching, and the last few nights have dipped well into the 40s; as a result, I've been favoring Climashield 3.6 quilts over ones insulated with CS 2.5 that (for me) really cr@p out at 48F to 49F. Where my mom lives back east, it's quite a different story, and she might not find much of a use for her birthday quilt/throw until after Labor Day...

Yes, TT, it is. A cinch channel was made integral with the inner shell fabric by folding and stitching the ends at an angle, tacked after quilting to form a recessed pocket to hold that two-hole button cord lock seen in the detail photo of the corner of the quilt. Additionally, a 22" long piece of 2.25" grosgrain ribbon was stitched to the shells on both sides of footbox before the shells were stitched to the Climashield and the quilt was inverted right side out; prior to closure, five KAM snaps were installed on each side of the inner shell at 5" intervals, backed b the internal grosgrain reinforcement. The snaps are visible only on the inside of the quilt, and they are blind on the outside for aesthetics. Together, the snaps and cinch cord create a standard top quilt footbox while remaining quite unobtrusive when the quilt is laid flat as an insulated throw blanket.

The snaps look great too. Thanks for the explanation.

I do like your timbuktu pattern, I had won a pair of straps from RBTR at the Florida Hangcon in the timbuktu pattern that I currently have a grand truk double.

Thanks, greyhound352. I'm glad you like the pattern. I plan to do more bogolanfini mud cloth-inspired textile patterns like it in the future as OutdoorINK designs for gear. It's cool that you won those straps as a prize. I find it gratifying and fun to see "Timbuktu" and my other patterns pop up where people are hanging all over the country.

I'm wondering about your choices for fabric. I see you have .9 oz for the outer and 1.1 oz for the inner. Can you explain your thinking?

(nighttime thrashing = need heavier inner fabric??)

Also, don't know how you keep producing such great stuff so quickly -- beautiful work!
