Hanging in the snow above the treeline

I've take an few trips in the deep snow and above the tiberline last year and was forced to go to the ground; it was ok but I certainly didn't enjoy it like it and it got me thinking.

What if I used really strong snow anchors and dug a deep trench to hang my hammock? Has anyone tried something like that? Any advice would be appreciated.

I saw a video a few years back where the guy dug fox holes between two "hammock pits" and his kids loved the heck out of that. Anything is possible but it would be a lot of work.

I do a lot of snow camping with my hammock but not above treeline. In Colorado you need the trees for a wind break. I usually like to attach my tree straps about as high as I can reach on my trees for the hammock. If I used that measurement I would need to dig a pretty deep hole. I'm sure it could be done however I prefer sleeping in the trees.

Beautiful pictures OutandBack. I recognize some of those places from the time we went over the top to Breckenridge, although there was no snow that time. Thanks for the memories!

I used to do a lot of climbing, winter camping, and camping above the treeline. Although, I have never used my hammock in these conditions, I think you're on the right track with snow anchors and snow trenches. A couple snow bollards would also work for anchoring. You shouldn't have to dig too deep for your anchors(depending on snow quality)... a pair of snow pegs per end buried horizontally and given time to set, should to the trick.
