    This is weird

I used to buy my Amsteel from Redden Marine, which is no longer in existence. I bought my last 100' of Amsteel from Vela Sailing Supply. The funny thing is (and I checked my receipts to make sure I wasn't crazy), I ordered 7/64" from both. The Amsteel from Redden Marine is on the bottom of the picture, the Vela is on top. I never bothered to actually measure the line but there is a significant difference in diameter. The only difference I can see in the description is that the Vela is listed as "12+."

So was I getting something bigger from Redden on accident? It measures almost 5mm, where the Vela is closer to 2.5mm.

Weird science--they look different and may have different number of strands--12 versus 8?!?!?

I have no idea where Vela gets the "Spectron 12+" reference from.

While Samson lists 7/64" as 2.5mm and 1/8" as 3mm, in reality, as shipped, 1/8" typically is flattened on the roll and measures ~4.5mm x 2.5mm until it is heavily weighted, at which time constructional compaction will shape it close to the listed dimension of 3mm.

    Here's a photo I just took with 7/64" over 1/8" Amsteel Blue...

Count the strands of your two samples. 7/64" will be 8 strand and 1/8" will be 12 strand.

You may have received 1/8" from Redden.

I didn't know redden marine disappeared. I'm running low on my last spool I bought from them. Where do I get another spool from if redden is gone?

Based upon the picture alone, I suspect Vela Sailing Supply filled your order wrong. Bottom cord looks like Amsteel, top cord looks like something different to me.

Definitely doesn't look like Amsteel. How does it feel? Softer? My Liros Dyneema rope looks pretty similar, and it's a lot softer than Amsteel.

And they sell 1/8" at .30 a foot. Redden, from what I remember, was around .21 a foot [Edit: for 7/64"] before the 5% forum discount.
