I use a strand out of a Cat5 ethernet wire (leave the plastic coating on) when I splice mason twine. Anything smaller would need ultra-nimble fingers to get splices done.
I'm a fan of the microcord Dutch sells. Keep in mind, if you're using it mainly for draw cord (like I am), get a color you want to like for a long time. I was on a blaze orange kick when I bought it. Needless to say, I have a long way to go and sometimes you just don't want a bright orange drawcord.
