Make sure you tie a half hitch or two after you tension the ropes

Sorry, no closeups that show the rings but all you have to do is add a slippery half-hitch (or really any other knot your comfortable with) after you've run the rope through the rings ... it will never fail. I've seen YouTube vids showing how to do this, very simple.

ChinoUSMC, I think you are forgetting to make a couple of half-hitches after you put the rope around the aluminum rings...

It was Hennessy himself who said not to use rings (from sailing experience, but the ropes on a boat suffer more from the elements, and take much more strain). It is by far the quickest way to rig your hammock though.

You are both correct. I forgot to tie it off again once it was set. <smacks forehead>

I'll try it again later. Thanks for the education!

    Love this set up.
I used it for the first time on the trail, and it worked great and made adjusting the side to side so much easier than lashing.
Used 2 half hitches after tightening and no slippage at all.

I am surprised by everyone holding the rap rings with a carabiner. I use a continuous loop (could use any cordage, really). I find it controls the rings a lot better.

Check out Derek Hansen’s YouTube video on the Becket hitch. It’s simpler, faster and lighter than rappel rings. No need to re-rig your hammock in any way.
