The "Iron Man" Hammock Stand

This thread inspired me to pull the trigger and build this style of stand. In light of the possibility that hanging the hammock lower may pull the legs towards each other, I decided to make the height adjustable with one of these: https://m.lowes.com/pd/SteelTek-1-1-...-Tee/999930886.

The idea is to slide it up and down the vertical supports and tighten the set screw at the desired hang height. Then the compression forces can be kept at the point where the cross bar attaches. The extra height of the vertical pole could then still be used for a higher tarp hang if desired. That's the theory anyway, I'll let you know how it works. Should have it up and running tmrw.

Yep, it is working well for me so far. I like the adjustability, especially since I will be using the stand mostly for prototyping and things always hang different at different spans and heights. Gotta test em all in the studio. :-)

I built mine out of 3/4" galvanized but I used a different base T ( https://m.lowes.com/pd/SteelTek-3-4-...port/999930958 ) which I lag screwed to a 4' length of 2x4. I felt with the 3/4" pipe, having the 2 set screws on the base collar would help with lateral swaying motion. So far so good. I am sure that 1 1/4" would be way more bomber but Im only 170# and like to pack up my stand and take it with me on occasion.

Now I wish I had used 1 1/4" pipe for my stand. Can not seem to find these in anything but 3/4" and 1 1/4". (Beyond this manufacturer, as all steeltek makes is these two sizes.)

I wish I had used 1 1/4" too! The 3/4" has been plenty strong enough to hold me, but the sway/squish factor would be way less in the 1 1/4" and I haven't packed it up to take with me once since building it. As a semi-permanent shop stand, less sway would be mo' betta'.

The adjustable height is a great feature though, so thanks for letting me know that those fittings are hard to find for other sizes in case I decide to build anew.

Beautiful! Just wondering how much does this 16' version weigh? I think it would be a great stand to set up in our son's former room for the Ridge Runner for some good "power naps" or anytime when time permits!

Well. It seems no one has an idea on the weight, so I'm thinking of weighing out a known length of the pipe and then calculate the total length required (and add in the individual weights of the extra attachment pieces) and that should give me a rough idea on the weight. I'm still interested in the TATO stand that I've yet to see in person.

Here's an estimate of the weight using the specs for all of the galvanized pipe, tees, elbows, couplers and caps:

Pipe: 42 ft (1x16' ridge, 2x7' verticals, 2x6' bases) x 2.27 lb/ft = 95 lb
Tees: 1.29 lbs x 2 = 2.6 lb
Elbows: 0.9 lbs x 2 = 1.8 lb
Couplers: 0.7 lbs x2 = 1.4 lb
Caps: 0.5 lbs x4 = 2.0lb

Total Weight: ~ 103 lbs

It's not hard to move - I just pick up each end and move it ~ 5 ft at a time.
