    I did a thing

I've embarked on my DIY journey. The ship is underway. Made my first hammock, bug net and am presently building my first tarp.

I still have quite a bit of work to do, but the only thing I can say about this project is that it is definitely a challenge! But I am enjoying it! Thanks to Jellyfish for the template and tutorial videos!

    Nice! You can do it!
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Something to be said about using gear you made yourself! It's a slippery slope on the diy ride, but worth every bit. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I got the reinforcements sewn in last night and double-roll hemmed the edges of the tarp (instead of grosgrain). I think the grosgrain ribbon that I have is too small to see on as an edge, but I might play around with the scraps to see about future projects.

The reinforcements were the most challenging part of this project so far. My tarp is 1.1 oz silnylon and the reinforcements are 1.9 oz ripstop. Not sure exactly where I went wrong, but I tried clipping and pinning the reinforcements to the tarp before sewing, but 3 of them slid more than a half an inch from where I started. I think the solution is to make my patches bigger; see them on; then trim the rest (just like Jellyfish does in her videos). I tried to skimp on the material and paid the price. It all worked out, thankfully, I was able to hide that particular error in the double-rolled hem (DR). Speaking of which: the DR hem went surprisingly smooth. I'll spend about a half hour tonight fixing some minor mistakes; overall it turned out ok. I was dreading the hem, but it was really satisfying to sew it. I didn't take any photos as it was late when I finished.

Jellyfish to the rescue with the cat-cut template!

Stick with it. You're doing great. We look forward to seeing your final results.

    Update: 6-3-17

Tarp is sewn. It's a rainy day plus I have too many competing priorities to pitch and seal the tarp. Besides, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to pitch it yet. Still pondering how to pitch it, how long the lines need to be, and how best to make sure it's adjustable and easy to use. Hopefully this weekend I'll find time to work on it.

In the mean time, any advice on how to pitch it? I have 50 feet of Zing-it to work with.

Fifty feet of Zing-It will make two 12-foot end tie-outs to splice to some Dutch Stingerz with enough left over for a set of 6-foot guy lines, but you're going to want some titanium bling...

Tarp looks sweet; love the blue accents.
