Pad Idea - Not Bad Idea

I had not seen this but needed to keep blue pad in place so I sewed in pockets. See photos. Also I am hanging from a continuous ridge-line with loops and marlin spike. No hardware, no adjustable slings. The hammock is under 9 feet but with the loops the ridge-line works out to 102" and the extra length gives more space under the ridge-line. Prusik knots slide easily on amsteel so a marlin spike is used to maintain ridge length. 15 nights of use in 4 states with temperature between 25 and 60. Tarp uses fixed loop and toggle on one end and Farrimond on other end. Centering is with prusiks.

What is the brown fabric on the blue mat? Is it there for extra insulation?

Before there were underquilts this type system was in use. Do a search for Speer Pad extender.

I used one of these before I had a UQ. They help! Shug shows a diy one in his video about using camping pads. Eno offers a commercial version called the hotspot

The brown forms a pocket sewn onto the main hammock fabric. Sort of like a partial double layer. One pocket holds a pillow pad, then the 2 larger pockets hold the main pad on both ends. The 2 wing pieces are held in place by a piece of fabric with a pocket on each side and then sliding under the center of the main pad similar to the Speer extender concept but not attaching to the center pad. Photo 6 shows the pockets sewn onto the main sheet without the pad pieces inserted.

Here's the one I made 2 years ago. I prefer my Klymit air pad over my UQ. No shoulder pinch, no calf ridge, and very very comfortable!

I like the partial double layer concept. I've toyed with the idea of a about a 4 foot long sleeve on one of mine but never committed to it b
