    For anyone curious I tried this yesterday and it works quite well. It's a little fiddly having to loop it through the tree strap every time but it was solid. I used a slipper half hitch to lock it in once I had it where I wanted as well and had no slippage.

    With that sort of rope you could skip the 'biner entirely and use a Blake's hitch.
