Converting a Blackbird double layer to single layer?

I've had an XLC double layer for a couple of years with a pad/sleeping bag.

It's great, however I'm about to go to a UQ/TQ combination (Wookie of course).

Is it worth converting my DL to an SL? It looks like it would save around 300g (11 oz).

If so, which layer would be the one to remove?

I have a very good seamstress at home so the technical difficulty shouldn't be a problem.

Note - postage costs to/from Aus probably prohibit selling mine and buying a new SL.

Are you sure 11oz is worth the risk?

    I wouldn't.
It'd be better to sell your DL as is. Or use it as is.
Even with a UQ, it is sometimes nice to slip a pad in the DL when temps dip low.

You can always get a single layer in the future.

This question comes up now and then, and the answer is usually: don't. If you want a single layer, buy one. An undamaged Blackbird will sell for close to the original price. Once it's modified, you'll have a hard time selling it at all. Plus there's always a risk that something goes wrong and the hammock won't be usable anymore. Have a look at the For Sale section here and see what your XLC might be worth. Then do the math: what is cheaper? Sell the DL for $x, buy the SL for $x - loss = $x. Or pay $x for the seamstress, which might or might not get the intended result?

For what it's worth, here are some threads:

    Thanks, all,

You've convinced me not to proceed with my "thought experiment"!

One of my considerations was that, with the upcoming purchase of a Wooki I'll effectively have a triple layer hammock. Not that big an issue given it's only a 300g weight penalty.

Oh, and Hutzelbein, I've been paying for the seamstress ever since I said "I do"

Then I have a better idea: ask her to sew a (new) single layer hammock!

"We" made a DL hammock (I cut, she sewed) - works well but it's not quite as good as a Blackbird. Not sure I have enough Brownie Points to suggest another attempt just yet!
