    First DIY Hammock/Bugnet/Tarp

I started hammocking part time about two years ago with a Yukon Outfitters hammock/tarp I bought on sale from Woot. It wasn't bad gear, but was a bit cramped for me. After looking at several vendors, I saw quite a few DIY posts and websites. Back before Christmas, I did some shopping on Ripstop by the Roll, and this spring got my first setup built. I decided on a dual-layer 1.6 HyperD for the hammock (Moroccan blue exterior/coyote interior) with a zippered bugnet kit and a Moroccan blue 1.6 silpoly winter tarp.

This was the first time I've used a sewing machine for anything resembling an actual usable item, so I can only credit the patience of my wife with getting this completed. The seams may not look professional, but it hasn't dumped me on the ground. Yet.

I've had it out for two campouts now, one of which was during a three day monsoon, and everything had held up and kept me dry. Now to pick out fabric for the wife's hammock, then the kiddos may be getting homemade birthday presents. I am getting full support from the wife as she has decided my new hobby requires that I buy her a new sewing machine.

Very well done!! I like that blue.
I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

Thanks, all. I'm a fan of blue to begin with, and the Moroccan is a little more subdued shade. The last campout was unseasonably hot, so I was able to setup in porch mode, which was nice. After I finish the wife's hammock, I think i'm going to try a hex tarp for summer use, and possibly a single layer for me. I've got the DIY itch now.
