I've found in the past my stuff smells of smoke and now I'm getting a down bag, I'd hate to get it stinking :/
How do you guys keep your gear, down bags etc smoke free if you have a fire ?

The only sure way I know is to not have a fire.
I do not hang that close to the fire as I've had sparks burn holes in a tarp before so no more fire close to my expensive hammock gear.
Yes I won't be having a fire under my tarp with my hammock etc but my clothes always tend to stink of smoke, even my base layers which i sleep in :/ Looks like I'll be sending my bag to the cleaners a few times lol
I am with TrailSlug on this. Hang far away from the fire. We also wait a bit before setting up if we are at a new site. This gives us a chance to at least try and detect wind direction. I know I know. Wind direction changes but it has helped on most trips.

I am 84 years old so that I grew up at a time when every home had a wood stove for cooking. Wood smoke meant security and fresh baked bread. I spent over thirty years working wildland fire so that I have never been bothered by smoke in fact I really like it. I had best close out before I offend someone.
i love the smell of campfire, always get excited when i throw my sweatshirt on at home and it smells like camp

The only sure fire way to avoid that is to stay away from the fire. If you're like most of us and have that ancestral yearning to be near a fire, just stay out of the smoke.

I don't build camp fires when I solo, but I recently hung in a shelter area where everyone else had a fire. The smoke hung in the area and now all of my gear smells.
I've accepted that unless I want to hermit away from everyone, my gear is going to smell like smoke.
Life has a melody.
What about breaking wind in the UQ?
Hiker funk?
General backpack pew?
Fire smell trumps all that.
Gonna happen.
