    Single ring suspension

    Hi,

Sorry to post a new thread on suspension !... I am sure the answer to my question is hidden somewhere in this forum...

I was wondering why there's not more people using the suspension system with the 6" tree straps, the MSH, and then a single cord (Amsteel?) to a ring right by the hammock allowing to adjust the lenght of the cord, which is eventually secured with a slippery half hitch.
Does that not hold? Maybe another type of rope would work better if Amsteel is too slippery for the slippery half hitch.

It seems to solve the weight, bulk and minimum hanging distance issues other methods have, and at the same time allow to adjust the lenght of the suspension with the hammock loaded.
What would be the inconvenient of this technique?

the amsteel does not hold knots well, and the knot really de-rates the strength of the cord.

I know several people do a similar thing with mule tape and a beckett hitch instead of the amsteel.

I use Spyderline in a similar configuration. It holds knots much better than Amsteel.

    Single ring suspension

Spyderline is the bomb! Spyderline holds knots better than amsteel. Spyderline does not splice easily and does not form into whoopie sling at all. Spyderline is tough stuff!
Mule tape and becket hitch to continuous loop and ditto for kevlar straps

Don't give up on your idea yet! The following, from Octagone, is similar to what you're thinking of. The Stainless Steel knock-off Loop Alien (ebay) instead of a ring makes it work great.

As for a ring, a useful aside to others here, if you're using two single Kevlar straps as your tree-huggers and suspension lines (i.e., as your total suspension), a featherweight SMC Descending Ring (REI has them) larks-headed to your hammocks CL, eliminates the abrasion and tighter turn radius you'd have on your 1/8"Amsteel (or thinner) hammock's CL. And it eliminates the sometimes difficult-to-untie slippery half hitch on the Kevlar.

It has a working load strength similar to Amsteel, and it doesn't stretch.

A bit hard to get, but I order mine from West Marine.

Seems to have a dyneema core with a protective outer sheath.

Anything of that sort available in a more sober uniform charcoal gray or black?

I would not say spyderline is any better than amsteel, it's different--
Maybe what you'd like to try in a single lead suspension with quick release knots?!?!
