Question Going to Ground :( question - TQ, sleep directly on pad or use liner / sheet?

Hello all -- going on a backpacking trip this summer to Philmont Scout Camp in NM and they don't allow hammocks
If considering using a TQ & Pad in a tent .... I am reluctant to lay directly on the Thermarest pad for comfort and sweat. I am thinking that having a light sleeping bag liner may be the way to go under the TQ and on the pad. It would also help to keep any sweat / muck from the 6 night backpacking trip for getting the TQ and pad dirty .

    Thoughts?

Personally when I family camp I use a pad, silk liner, and my TQ for ground use. Lots of nights in the summer I just use the silk liner but have my summer TQ available should I get chilled.

I sleep directly on the pad without issues. Topquilts work great on the ground.

If you are tentless, carry a ground cloth. 3x9' tyvek works great.

you need to research night time temps you could expect @ Philmont

the last time i camped at their base camp altitude(just down the road from the scout ranch) the temps dropped down low enough to need a bag most nights and if my remembery serves me correctly the back packing trips go UP into cooler temps

if you are concerned about sleeping directly on a pad/mat you can fold a full size sheet in half and sew it into an envelope to protect your sensitive skin

i think i see some researching on your horizon

EE is now making super light pad covers. It's like they invented it just for your Philmont Trek.

I haven't tried them. I bet they feel nice, but not sure if they will need cleaned more or less than the pad itself. This wouldn't protect your TQ either.

I wonder if you could use this like a sleeping bag liner. It's only 1.5 oz

Ok, even as I point to the new pad cover and consider the liner as well, some web searches remind me. Just count on your long pants and shirt sleeping clothes. You can always vent your quilt as needed.

I'm looking forward to a Philmont Trek next year. Looking forward to what you decide and your experience afterwards.

    When is your trek date?

I use a pad and TQ but I have what therm-o-rest called a sheet cover which has little weight but is nicer to sleep on rather then a direct pad. I was checking REI if they still sell it and I did not see them. However, they have the following Big Agnes Saddleback Bedroll
    https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/produ...roll-long-wide

and they have them in different sizes and may have one that fit your pad.

    Sleeping bag liners suck.

They twist if you move around. Base layers work great for this and they move with you.
