What is your preferred underquilt length and why?

I'm planning on making an underquilt for myself and one for my boyfriend out of 7.5 oz Climashield Apex (down to 10° rating). I'm 5'10" and he's about 6'1", I sleep cold and he's skinny, so i feel confident about using the 7.5 oz. Our top quilts will be out of 5.0 oz.

What I'm having a hard time with is deciding whether to make a full, 1/2 or 3/4 length underquilt. What are your opinions/experiences?

I know everyone is different, but here is what works for my son, wife, and myself. For anything cool to cold weather related (say 60 degrees and down) we all prefer full length. The confidence it gives to have your feet covered seems to take any fear away. We will probably not see lows like you, but have all slept comfortable and warm in the teens. For anything above 60 (and those surprise temp drops into the 50's) we can use 3/4's and it's not a problem. My advice is to look in the trips section and try to find a local hang. Most folks would be Hapoy for you to try out some gear and give you hands on experience and advice before you dive into your project! Good luck!

Full lengths for me as well. I have cold feet plugs I do not like the addition of that ridge that the shorties produce. I backpack and just pay the penalty for the few extra grams.

I started out when 3/4 length was the in thing. I found it miserable. Fiddly, cold spots plus the ridge hurt my legs.

I thought long and hard about how to keep keep my backside warm, I also wanted some wiggle room.

I am 62 ins. tall and shrinking. I decided 4Ins. On each end woul not add a bunch of undesirable bulk or weight. With 4 inches, I have wiggle room. No ridge, no real fiddle factor. I went with 70ins. I am pleased with the result.

Full length FTW! When it's winter I don't want to mess around. I'm 6'2", and my winter underquilts are 80" long and, ideally, 50" wide.

Full length (almost). I'm not always in my hammock for the night. Maybe I'm just killing a little time before dinner and want to lie down for 30 minutes. If it's not real cold, don't want to mess with my top quilt which also means a foot pad. With a full length, I can just hop in and have full coverage, especially for my feet.

I say "almost" full length since I found a 62" to be perfect for me at 69" tall. I don't count my head since I always have a pillow or clothes sack anyway. It's the absolute minimum I can use but still save bulk and weight. Otherwise, the 72" Short Incubators from Hammockgear are my goto UQ.

I'm a full length guy usually. I've played with 3/4 quilts... but I've landed on full length for me.

Winter, full length short to fit from heels to shoulder (I'm 5'10).

    Warmer 3s and summer, a 2/3 UQ.
