    Hooded top quilt

UGQ's blog says some top quilts are available with an optional hood that can be cinched up on cold nights to help retain warmth.

Anyone ever saw that ? Any picture ?

I have a 0° sleeping bag with integrated hood and neck draft colar for tent camping. You get a wonderful sleep with this. I am not sure how appropriate it would be for a top quilt used in hammock camping, and especially how you would attach this hood, since the back side is open on top quilts.

Tried out the SMR TQ at the Sipsey AL hang. It is really nice. The hood, while not removable, can just be tucked under your neck for an extra bit of cushion kind of like a pillow if it's not needed. My girlfriend wants one, but her Jalapeño Pepper just arrived, so we'll give that one a try. The SMR kickstarter says the TQs will be shipped to backers in November.

I use this hood that I made, I like it to be separate and only use it when needed.IMG_0063.jpg

As the above picture....just sew the shape you want beforehand,
cut the back out of the sleeping bag with hood & fold
    over or line exposed edges.
I left a little more around the shoulder area
so it's trapped underneath me. Works great.
Easy to get into & out of...stick a leg or arm out if it gets too
warm & you choose when the hood is needed.

I have a Sierra Designs Backcountry Quilt with a similar idea.

I haven't used it over the winter but maybe I'll test on my next trip out.

I like the separate hood solution. It's best for me since I'm a side sleeper.

ScoutMaster, that is a beautiful execution of a good idea!!!

Thanks! I think that I may have put too much down in it though, I got pretty warm at the winter hang back in February! I think that the low was about 20.

I'm in the down hood camp too, but some of these quilt designs are really cool and give me some design ideas.

The advantages of having the hood seperate - and you could design one with snaps that correspond to snaps on a quilt - is you can wear it around camp for a big boost in warmth. I can get away with this and my rainshell in shoulder seasons and don't have to carry a puffy. Then again many people here wear their quilts around camp, but I am still a little too nervous to dirty up / catch my quilt on fire for that lifestyle!
The want of wandering, and a welcomed whimsy.
