    Membrane PU4000 For a Jacket?

I know Membrane PU4000 is popular for tarps, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried it for a jacket? I understand that it isn't breathable, but from the reviews I've read, waterproof/breathable is a paradox anyway. If the weather is warm enough, you're either going to be wet from from water soaking through from the outside or from sweat overwhelming the breathability of the fabric from the inside. The trick it seems is to remain warm and just deal with the wetness, hence the idea of using this very waterproof fabric for a jacket.

I've been hiking with those super thin emergency ponchos, because they're the lightest and least expensive option I know of, but they do tend to snag and shred pretty easily walking through brush. Would Membrane PU4000 be a significant upgrade over this in terms of durability, or would it still tend to get shredded?

I've been thinking doing this, too. I would add a jersey mesh or something on the inside, too with either permanently open ventilation or *maybe* adding zippers. The plastic feeling on my bare arms would seriously bug me without a liner. But even with a mesh on the inside, it would be MUCH lighter than most jackets. And waterproof as all getout, too. I don't know how great it would be on ultra durability, but it's what I use for my tarps so I would trust it for most trail time. I wouldn't take it bushwacking, though.
    Cheers,

I do very little bushwacking, almost none. But, almost every trail I've hiked in recent years has overgrown sections where you have to push through branches, brush, thorns, etc. Having never held the fabric in hand, I have to wonder if it could take this nominal amount of abuse common to so many trails?

Luke's Ultralight makes a rain jacket out of PU4000. It'll work, but you'll want the ability to vent, i.e. large pit zips and possible pockets with mesh.
