Is this a safe use of descender rings?

    Hi everyone,

I've lurked on this form for years and every time I've had a question I've been able to find the answer until now. Is this a safe way to hang?

Basically, i've been using a carabiner on one end and 2 descender rings on the other end of the Hamic. But the descendent rings constantly slip and drive me crazy. This new setup is kind of like using a ring as a marlin spike (at least that's what I was thinking when I was fiddling around with it).

It seems to be working however I've only used it for short naps.

    Thanks!

I"m not an engineer but that doesn't look safe to me. I don't believe the descender ring is ever supposed to support a load in that manner. Someone with more knowledge will chime in soon I'm sure.

An easy way if your suspension is slipping using the "standard" ring rig is to tie a simple slippery half-hitch once you've got the adjustment set how you want it.

    Edit: misjudged picture.

Looks like you are using the ring as a "toggle". That's fine if the ring won't slip out, but i suspect that it will.

Does your ring slip out or does the amsteel slip on ring? Is that a larks head on ring? Is the larks head (if it is a larks head) coming off a fixed loop or continuous loop?
There are lots of different ways to rig your hammock--and if it works for you--keep using it. But if it fails then it's time to modify your suspension or even better--switch to a new suspension, that you see commonly used, so that right away it should work without slipping or failing-falling. Good luck Barbara!

    descender rings,straps,Dutch Buckles

I have two descender rings larked on to both end of my WBBB 1.1DL With that arrangement I can use straps alone with slippery half hitches required to prevent slippage and/or whoopie slings attatched to a descender and attached to the strap. My favorite connection is the Dutch Buckle to hold the whoopie sling.Being able to use the whoopies or just the strap gives another option for longer span;also a nice water break.20161014_113341.jpg20161014_104157.jpg20161014_104328_001.jpg

Looking @ the pics, the voice in the back of my mind says it looks a bit dodgy....
2 different shaped rings not mating well together, maybe some localized side loads
if the larger circular ring slips down partway into the triangular ring.

I use two rings too....always a slippery half hitch to secure, otherwise depending on
the suspension your using, they can slowly creep. Dyneema, Amsteel, Dynaglide etc etc
are very strong & light but they're also very slippery suckers.

It's not going to hurt the descender ring. I'd be more worried about the triangle ring. If it's welded the force of the descender ring could spread it enough to slip through.

That's what I was thinking, too. Plus, I'm not a fan of hanging from metal-on-metal. I did it for a 1/2 hour nap in my garage once, and notice that my previously pristine carabineer had a fresh wear mark on it from rubbing against the eye bolt in the wall.

My first thought as well. Does that triangle have a weight rating?

The triangle came on the tree strap with my warbonnet blackbird, it's meant to be hung with a knot but I don't know what it's rated. I think they've changed their tree straps since I bought mine.

I suck at tying knots that actually release after they've loaded so I was trying to come up with a better system using what I have on hand.

I'm no engineer either, and I agree it looks dodgy. I ordered a set of whoopieslings and hooks today.

    Thanks for your help!
