    My Pole Mod

Well after building my first tarp from RSBTR'S 1.1 silpoly winter tarp kit (https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...d.php?t=135619), using some design ideas from Kitsacowboy's thread (https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...d.php?t=131854), I decided to add a pole mod.

This being my first tarp I'm using it as the test subject for multiple ideas. I had added grossgrain loops to the ridgeline with some leaking issues. After applying a coat of silicone mixed with mineral spirits I think I've fixed that. I want to try the loops again and see if I can fix this issue without seam sealing.

A quick online trip to Quest Outfitters, and $57.58 +10.95 shipping, and I had 16 x18" .344 male poles , 2 x 18" female poles and four tips.

When the poles arrived I found I only needed 6 male and 1 female pole per side. I had to cut an additional 6" off the last piece to make a 120" pole. I just used a plumbing tube cutter for the task.
This left me 4 extra 18" poles. ..hmmmm...

I didn't have enough shock cord so I siliconed the tips into the last poles and assembled them loose.

The poles are fed through the grossgrain loops and into the 1/2 Beasty D's on either pull out. Fit is taught but not super tight.

With this setup there is a vastly noticeable increase in space. Plus a tighter pitch. Also, as an extra bonus, porch mode requires no poles and is as simple as unhooking the guy lines from the pegs

That is great! Nice job on that. I really like the way the porch mode turned out.

    That looks phenomenal.

Im about to start on my own winter tarp out of 1.1 silpoly from RBTR and have a question. Did you just sew a loop of grosgrain in the seam for the pole to run through on the top seam? I think that's what Im seeing and may add that in as I sew things up. Also, how far in from the ends did you sew them?

Yes, they are 1/2 grossgrain loops spaced the same distance as the tie outs.
Beware, they act like a drip line and create leaks that I'm still battling. If I can fix the leaks they are great.

Great post and good timing. I was just looking for poles online today to see if I could fit my quest tarp. It's large enough I think. 13 x 12
This gives me something to think about. I hope to see more at the MAHHA this weekend in the rain.

    Thanks for the information.

    *puts on thinking cap*
I wonder if I were to do a flat-felled seam on the ridge line instead of the grosgrain ridge line and then seal it good where I sewed the grosgrain in the seam...
