    snakes

Most all my hangs are near rivers with lots of snakes. Is there a way to prevent snakes from coming down suspension lines etc. & getting into the hammock?
Or am I just paranoid about nothing?

Yes, or two. Or maybe a bugnet?

While it's certainly possible, I've never heard of it happening.

Just use a bugnet during that time of year.

Tap each end of your suspension 3 times with your index finger and chant "No Snake Shall Pass". 99% sure this will work

Try the best of both worlds. Bugnet + Trained Mongoose.

Actually I've never heard of this happening either, but I might start keeping a wooden flute up in my RL organizer after this thread!

Here in Louisiana, if it is warm enough for the snakes to be active, then it is warm enough for the mosquitos to also be out. That is about all but about 3 days during the year. That being said, due to the mosquitos, the bug net on my Ridge Runner will have been unfurled from the foot end and deployed, which means zipped 360 degrees around the exterior edge.

If a snake can unzip my full bug net, then I am going to name him Bob, and take him on the road, and charge a nickel for people to watch him.
We have our share of snakes here also, and they are excellent climbers.

Seriously though, I don't know of any deterrent to keep a snake from climbing the suspension. I would assume that the larger the tree trunk diameter, the more difficult it would be for a snake to climb.
But a full zippered bug net on your hammock would prevent entry into the hammock, unless you run into "Bob".
I know it's not the lightest gear, and it's a lot of stuff, but I use a canoe, so it's a lot like car camping, but without the other cars.

This pic should do the trick.
But seriously, never even considered that possibility. Maybe the fact that 98% of the time I'm in my hammock I have the bugnet zipped closed ( camping in Florida require a near year round bug protection) keeps me from thinking about anything slithering into my hammock. I have had birds land on my tarp and squirrels chase each other down my tarp ridgeline when napping in the back yard, but that's about it. Never even had ants travel down my suspension even when they are on the tree I hang from. I wouldn't sweat it.

What you need is the Snake Knot as shown on YouTube!?!?
Now all joking aside--Phantom guessing again, as I often do.
I'm thinking most bugs snakes and critters are hungry and looking for a meal--and they use their great sense of smell to find something to eat and warn them of danger. If you put a fresh squirt of bug spray on your tree strap, then most critters will smell this unpleasant odor and go elsewhere?!?!?

No, this will not work. You have to use your hiking pole. One firm tap is sufficient. Bonus points if it's made from natural materials and guaranteed success with a staff and not merely a pole. Also, the incantation should be "Snakes shall not pass."

Important note: This could cause your suspension to fail. See the following video for more details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJZZNHekEQw
