I've used regular plastic pony beads and have only broke one (slammed in car door.) For the ultimate in durability, I've used 1/8" brass and zinc plated steel nuts (a little on the heavy side if you're counting grams.) If you're looking for "bling," durable, and super light, might I suggest www.firemountaingems.com and click on metal beads then pick aluminum as your material.
Drill out the top of a lego head and it fits 7/64 Amsteel perfectly. Extremely durable, and ubiquitous around my home.

Leggo head.jpg This one cause it glows in the dark.

Zip tie for me, I got so excited when making my last set I didn't think to put a stopper in. My next set will have some Lego heads , I think that's a great idea.
