    Jerven fabric for underquilt..

    Hi,

I have been lurking in HF for quite some time, and I am impressed with the ingenuity and passion you guys have for exploring the comfortable hanging way of life.

I have not started my own quest towards raising above ground yet, but I am researching and expect to get up there with you guys soon.

I have something I want to share with you DIYs though. I live in Norway, and we have a product here that seem to me to be excellent for hammock insulation.

The product is called Jerven Fjellduk and is sold as a multi use tent/bivvy/poncho. Fjellduken is lined and has removable arms. The outer layer is waterproof and is lined with reflective aluminium on the inside. Many tests have been done with this product, and it will keep you comfortable down to -40 degrees celcius. Fjellduken is used extensively by mountain rescue personnel, the Norwegian army and others operating in extreme cold environments.

The Fjellduken itself is quite expensive as everything else is in Norway, but there is however an option for the DIYs. The fabric used for outer layer and different weights of lining can be bought per meter in the Norwegian webshop. I do not see it in the international webshop though.

I am not in any way affiliated with Jerven, but I know what my first DIY project would be. Creating an underquilt of the 200 grams lining.

Welcome out of lurkerdom! Definitely interested in pics of your project when you get it up.

How strong is this fabric? Suitable for a hammock body on its own?

That's a really interesting material. I had fun reading the product page.

    https://jerven-com.secure.flexiweb.no/page/7357/

Some of my favorite bits were:

'Don’t heat for the crows! Get your legs inside the bag and close ”the door” behind you.'

'A big enough poncho, big enough to be
used as a wind sack - for sitting in it. That’s the way it all started, and The Jerven
bag Original has been, and will remain unchanged! To put it in another way; the
wheel cannot get to be more round.'

The wheel cannot be more round... that's a beautiful expression. I'm going to find reasons to use it in the future.

Welcome to the forum. I was wondering about the weight of the product and compactability??.

Those are norwegian expressions directly translated. Sounds a bit quirky in english, but the meaning get through I guess.

The weight is the disadvantage of the Jerven, and some of the bags weigh up to 2000 grams, but the they kinda justify it with the versatility of the product.

An underquilt made of the best insulating liner would however only be less than half the size of the bag though, so 1000 grams more or less?

I am uncertain about how it compress, and I will give an update when I have my bag.

Link to the 'fabric store' for those interested.

Norway being a mountainous subarctic country has temperatures from +10C (50F) at the western/southern coastal areas to -30C (-20F) in the northern/eastern areas during the winter. I stay at the coastal west, and we are having the coldest winter in decades -10C (10F). So much for global warming. :S
