I am becoming more familiar with different types of gatherings. I wanted to reach out to the community and see how many types there actually are and which ones are the strongest. No-sew or channel?

After I gather the end of the hammock in whatever folded fashion I desire, I simply tie the end in a single overhand knot. Simple, elegant, strong, safe. No whipping, no sewing.
Apart from running the suspension through the channel I have used...
- the Warbonnet whip
- the accordion whip or zigzag fold (does the same as the WB whip, really)
- the Hennessy whip
- the W-fold
I didn't like the W-fold. It's too imprecise and small changes can have a huge impact (mostly negative). The others are nice, and I use them all.
Marty at WildernessLogics has a sturdy hemmed channel end--and he inserts a lightweight cord through channel and ties it in a gathered ball. Then he ties it by criss crossing cord and wraps around finishing with a square knot and then melts the ends together with a lighter.
For a whoopie sling suspension or a continuous loop suspension they are simply larks headed around entire hammock just below gathered ball. The fixed loop on the end of whoopie sling or continuos loop simply CHOKES entire hammock and does not rely very much if at all on strength of sewn channel--instead it uses entire strength of hammock.
I think this may be STRONGEST but all the other methods work just fine.
Interesting fast simple knot finished end used by bowl-maker.

I use XTREKKER'S method.
Sewn channel and zip tie to bunch it up. Then Larkshead a loop of Amsteel behind it.

I have been doing a little experimenting on whipping and I have come up with some I really like. At the foot end, I find the center mark on the narrow side of the hammock. From there is loosely roll or fold until I hit that center mark. Go to the other corner of the foot end and do the same thing. It creates a footbox type of pocket, shores up flappy fabric and gives a better view down the end of the hammock. I think the key is the loose roll so it has some stretch. I need to get a couple photos up because it is really working nicely.
Very interesting! I would like to try something like that, so would you have to have a channel sewn to bring the ends together or could you manually bring them together and tie and knot in it and wrap the sling or continuous loop in front of knot?
