Does the spreader bar want to walk up the suspension at all? Or do the caraniners keep it on the amsteel loops?

Mine stays put right at the end of the hammock on the CL. If anything, it presses down on the hammock ends.

I'm no physicist, but believe it is because the two hammock suspensions form 2 sides of a triangle that is widest at the spreader bar, and the spreader bar the third side. The spreader bar is under pressure inwards from the weight of the hammocks and suspensions, even unloaded.

Just an update since April... We've been using the pole and spreader bar version 2.0 about two weekends per month, and it works great! No further modifications have been made. We really like it!

Doing some research on diy spreader bars for a tandem hang, thx for the info danyll! I'm gonna try this pvc method out.
How much did your bar kit end up weighing? Thinking aluminum setup at Dutch Ware might be lighter, but perhaps not by much?..

Just an update, 3 years later and the original Spreader bar 2.0 is still going strong!

Also, the cheap 12’x16’ poly tarp from Menards is, too! I did have to add a ridge tieout and D ring as the grommets failed pretty quickly. A quick 15 minute fix.

Here it is in hex mode last night for more air flow on warm nights. I guy out the grommets one grommet from the corners and then I just turn in the corner flaps and tie them together under the tarp. That way, I can use the tarp in A-frame mode when more coverage is needed, or hex mode to maximize airflow, but still get plenty coverage.

Note that in our set up, the tarp has to be pretty high to accommodate the spread of the hammocks. Probably not good for hammocking in storms, but then again, neither are we!

Oh, and I know this answer is way, way, way overdue, but Spreader Bar 2.0 weighs 13.1 ounces/371 grams.
