    A little introduction

Hello all, I'm Carl from New Hampshire and will go by nhcaesar here on the forum. I'm 70 years old and enjoy running half marathons (46 completed on my way to bucket list of 50) and hiking. I don't currently own a hammock but have made some hiking gear already including a 10' X 10' emergency tarp (material from RSBTR) and some ditty bags to carry hiking stuff. I do not own a sewing machine so all my gear is truly hand made! As a hiker in the White Mtns. I've noticed that stealth campsites big enough for my tent are few and far between. This has lead me to consider making my own hammock because there are lots and lots of suitable trees here and you don't have to look for flat terrain to use one. So I've joined up to learn (and possibly share) about hammocks and hammock making.

Watch Shug's ten part series How to Hang a Hammock on YouTube. Maybe read Derek Hansens book about hammocks and definitely go to a local group Hang--there you will see all kinds of hammocks rigged in every imaginable way. And if you buy or make a hammock or two be sure to have your hammock at least 11 feet by 5 feet. Good luck and great running!

Welcome and good luck! I have family in Mason NH and lived in Nashua for a year, some great woods up there.
The want of wandering, and a welcomed whimsy.

Welcome, from central Massachusetts! I started with an inexpensive hammock (GrandTrunk Ultralight) and a used hammock stand, just to see if it was something I would like. It took a couple of nights for my brain to figure out that I wasn't going to launch myself out of it. And I was hooked! There's quite a bit of information here, and sometimes it can be a bit of info-overload, but half of the fun is finding out what works for you. Good luck!

+1 on Shug videos and Derek Hansen's book, "The Ultimate Hang," (and his website, too).
