That was certainly not the intention friend.

Unfortunately the diagram referenced contains a grievous error in labeling that the creator has not yet come forward to claim and correct so your misunderstanding is completely justifiable.

Enjoy, hang your hang, and use that time to forget about things like torque, shear, and force components. I do.

I've heard that some people backpack for the hike and others back pack for the camp.
I haven't back packed much so I need to rephrase... I camp for the campfire. With hammocks, soon I'll be able to say that I camp for the campfire and the sleep.

Playing around with that if you change the hang angle to 5 then the shear force ramps up to over 1000 pounds. Can some one explain (if there is a video out there even better) how this is possible?

Does this mean there is 1000 pounds of force pulling horizontally? If I had an inline scale and put it between the tree strap and the suspension would it read 1000 pounds?

It seems hard to picture but yes. You probably have experience of this though without realizing it. Ever tried to pull all the slack out of a long, heavy, cable? Notice how intensely difficult it becomes to get all the slack out? Another way to feel it is to put your loaded backpack in your hammock. Tie one end to a tree, and start raising the other end. As you pull it past 20 degrees you will quickly feel the force required to keep raising it increase. I suspect you will notice you have supreme difficulty raising it past 5 degrees. That 30 pounds now requires hundreds of pounds of force to hold it at that angle. To get it to 0.4 degrees would require just over a ton of force. In theory, to hold that 30lbs completely horizontal would require infinite force.

If you plot out the math you see that things are pretty reasonable until around 15 degrees and from there the force ramps up to infinity as the angle approaches 0.
