Yes. I have a rectangle tarp with a 12' ridgeline and additional tie outs on both sides. I get full coverage when needed, can close off each ends with the doors that are created by the additional tie outs, or I can connect the the 2 corners on each side to create a hex tarp in fair weather. I would say a rectangle tarp is very versatile for most conditions.
After making myself an 11' x 12' Xenon Wide sil-poly hammock tarp that has proven to be really effective, I've been planning to make myself a 12' x 12' square tarp out of the same Xenon Wide material. In addition to hammock applications over both gathered-end and bridge hammocks, I ought to be able to use it to execute a variety of interesting ground pitches.
A 12-foot square or rectangle tarp can easily be configured to provide full enclosure around your 11-foot gathered-end hammock (with a 110" RL), if you place your ground tie-outs every 36" along the edges.

You can go from a porch mode to a fully battened down tent structure that's good for high winds and keeping out driving rain.

My winter tarp is 10.5' square (for use over a 10' hammock- I am 63" tall). It gets the job done every time. I did make a pair of Grizz Beak clones but seldom use them- I like to see out.
I prefer either rectangle or hex over asymetrical and diamond. I personally like the coverage in case of a downpour. I balance weight with comfort and would not describe myself as a minimalist...
I used my 8x10 tarp over my Eno hammock several times with good success. I would be plenty comfortable with any hammock up to about 10ft under a 10ft long tarp, any more than that and it would worth it to bump up. I think with rectangular tarps, you do want to make sure and give yourself a variety of tie outs. this gives the most flexibility.

Derek's ideas for different pitch options using a square tarp
I love my 11x10 rectangle for all of the reasons above I prefer it over a winter tarp because of its versatility. It's my go to tarp unless I'm backpacking in gaurunteed mild conditions.
I use a 10x13 beast of silnylon. It weighs two pounds but gives many options for setup.
It is a multi purpose setup with many options.
Winter mode, porch mode, modified porch, and, in those rare cases, makes a great "to the ground " tarp tent.
It's heavy, but it was cheap. Very waterproof and large enough to accommodate two.
