Trip Report video: Hammock camping in Grand Gulch Part 1

Last weekend Max, my two nephews, and the Wolf Family backpacked Grand Gulch in Utah. This is an amazing canyon. I wasn't sure we would be able to find adequate trees to hang our hammocks, but thanks to the beta I got here on Hammock Forums, I took the leap of faith and we pulled it off. This is an amazing area to explore. Enjoy part 1 of our trip.

Awesome! What a gorgeous area! I visited Utah with my wife and I was seriously depressed about leaving. Looking forward to part 2!

WOW! What a beautiful area. Absolutely great job on the video editing. Your son is great in these videos and man these guys are troupers for hiking that far. Thanks for sharing this area of the country with us that have never had to chance to get out that way.

A couple of questions if you have time.
    - Is this open camping or do you have to have a permit?
    - What is the device attached to your backpack strap? Is it a GPS watch?

Thanks for watching TrailSlug. To answer your questions, Yes - you need a permit to hike the Grand Gulch. I think they issue 25-30 permits a day. You can reserve them or they do allow walk ups on a first come first serve basis. The camping is open in that there are not specific camp sites, but the soil there is protected and so you need to find a spot where you are not stepping on the 1000 year old "black dirt." It wasn't an issue for us for the most part. The last night was the only difficult night for us to find a camp site, because we hiked until nearly sundown and ran out of time to find the "right" spot.

I use a Garmin watch to track my hikes and runs. The battery lasts forever on those things. I don't use it to navigate, but just to keep track of how far I've traveled.

I hope I answered your questions.

    Take care

Looks like a place I would love to hike. Might have to recruit my son in law and daughter in Utah and make a go of it!
