My backpacking/ camping CPAP battery solution.

I have been trying to find a workable affordable backpacking CPAP battery solution for some time. I've tried alot of batteries including my (until recently) regular go to 25lb car emergency battery (not a backpacking solution). You know, the ones meant to be kept in your trunk? I think I have found the answer after much battery testing.

I'm using a 12v Remstar M Series CPAP (17CFM) unit without the humidifier and and currently an Aomaso battery pack I ordered from Amazon.

So I found this Aomaso battery pack on Amazon for 70 bucks. This unit was different than the others because it has a 12V/15A cigar lighter output. It's also 4200mAh which is quite sizable. Hoping to get at least three days of use from this battery.

Finding a 12v compact battery isn't a problem the problem is finding one with enough amps to power the CPAP as it draws more amps when it starts up. My Remstar seems to need at least 5 amps to operate. The cigar lighter port allowed me to used the 12v cable I already had for my CPAP so no need to order anything else. The battery is heavy at 3lbs and brings my total CPAP/battery combo to 6lbs and change. A workable albeit heavy multi day backpacking solution.

The second runner up was the TalentCell Rechargeable 72W 132WH 12V/11000mAh This little unit is a gem. 12v, 6amps max and only 1.6lbs. The battery also came with a short cord that actually fit my CPAP machine! COOl! This battery would be great for a single overnight-er or for the person who's CPAP runs at a lower CFM thus not using as much juice. At 17CFM I was able to get 11 hours out of this unit. I could stretch it for a multi-day trip, but while 5 hours of sleep is fine when im home, I like to sleep in when camping. Would be a great 3lb solution for me.

My CPAP and battery hang in a zippered bag from the head end of the hammock RL using a mini biner that I have wrapped the RL so it doesn't move. I have also constructed a shorter power cord in an effort to decrease weight and improve packability. I'm working on a shortened air hose.

I have been quite fortunate because i have not used my cpap while hammock camping and so far i have only awoken with a headache once (knock on wood)
I probably should use it but the fresh outdoor air has been enough .When out camping i like to stay Unplugged from everything that i can! and the cpap is a major pain.
At some point i'm gonna need to set up an outdoor rig for camping and threads like this are gonna come in very handy,, Thanks for sharing.

Glad to hear you can get by, hopefully you can hold out as long as possible. Unfortunately I don't have the option of going without. I've tried, but my anxiety grows to the point where I cant sleep. Not like me at all which is funny. I didn't mind the machine at all until I started camping again. What a PITA now that im into hammocks. I'd do almost anything to be able to just lay down on a whim and take a nap while swinging in the breeze.

If you use some of the ultra capacitors, in line with the battery you can handle more of the spike in powered draw. The ultra capacitors don't replace batteries, but they take the edge off the spikes in power need that the batteries can supply so the batteries don't surge lower.

Also a 10W solar panel might help? They make some nice flat panels that can help extend the trip. While they will not fill the battery pack they can extend your trip.

Have you looked into having a custom mouth piece made? They work well with some types of sleep apnea. You'd need to probably have another sleep study done and see a specialist dentist to get one.

It may work for you, and only weight a few ounces. It's worth looking into.

Every day is a good day.

I think I saw another post of yours mentioning the the mouthpiece. I'm going to check into it. That would be a great solution.

I have no doubt that there is a solution, but I'm not an electrical genius and don't play one on TV. I have contacted several places to see if I could have something made, but no one was interested. Had to start buying and trying.

My backpacking/ camping CPAP battery solution.

    If this helps?

He talks about how it works and just using a solar panels and the capacitors you can run a saw. Which is a crazy load. But he talks about the idea.

Often solar panels and just the inverter with batteries doesn't do well and you really have to have the right combo of
    Solar--> charge controller --> battery --> CAPacitors--> to inverter

It's available as a first line treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, but like I said you'd probably have to have another sleep study because they would want to make sure it's working. I know a dentist can fit you for one. If it worked for you it would be awesome to be able to just pack that and never worry about a battery. You'd be able to nap whenever you wanted on the trail, and only carry a few extra ounces.

Every day is a good day.

Do you know the name of the mouthpiece? What they call it?
