    Thawing out the hammock stand

Do you remember that scene from Gladiator when he says "The Frost. Sometimes it makes the blade stick" ?

That was the situation I was in yesterday. Maybe it was a combination of steady rain Friday, and then sub-freezing temperatures on Sunday night (~25 degrees), but when I went to take my Tato stand down yesterday morning, it was stuck together.

I ended up dragging all the parts into my sister's house so they could thaw before I could collapse the stand.

This makes me think about what I would do if I had to get the stand down in another Gladiator-esque situation and I didn't have the ability to put it somewhere to thaw out. I don't really see myself putting the top rail on the roof of my car.

Have you dealt with this? What did/would you do?

I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

Rubbing alcohol is a good way to defrost if you are in a hurry. Put some in a spray bottle and spray on the joints. I do not own a stand but it is a simple way to defrost. You can also dilute the alcohol a little by adding water to the solution. Give it a try.

I didn't know that. This is a good idea. I have to make a new bag for my stand anyway since the bag it came with is already falling apart. I could make a designated bottle pocket in there.

Now isopropyl alcohol has many good applications. You can put it in a cat food can alcohol stove for fuel too. Just be careful if you use it for fuel it's hard to see the flames in the daytime but you can see the flame in low light.

When you put it back together, give the connecting ends a wipe with mineral oil on a cloth. That little bit of lube will help keep the water out and make the ends not freeze together next year. WD-40 works, but mineral oil won't turn.
    Thanks,
