I recommend using 4x6's or 6x6's. I tried using 4x4's and they broke. Now I use hammock trees ( pier pilings. )
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I've hung from 4x4's for years (6'3" - up to 285 lbs) without issue. Exactly how many have had this problem? is it just an urban legend that people keep repeating?

Depends on the quality of the 4x4. If you get them from Home Depot you'd better get at lease a 4X6.

Too late! lol. I'm not digging up a 4x4 set 36" in the ground and a giant lump of concrete it's stuck into to avoid falling from about foot in the air. At first had a metal clothes line post that rotted out at the bottom, I fell to the ground and the post fell and hit me on the head. It must have looked like a scene from the Three Stooges!

Yeah Id be more concerned with the post hitting me than me hitting the ground.

+1, falling 'about a foot' to the ground would be the least of my worries.

Agreed, potential of neighbors looking on would be personally devastating.

That too. Family members or friends could potentially escalate that situation.

Nah, they already think I'm nuts! Sleeping in a hammock under a tarp in the back yard in freezing mid-winter conditions kind of gave it away.
