4x4 free standing? wouldn't do it
+1 Here I frequently hang from 4x4's at home under my deck. The key is the top bracing. I would avoid using 2x4's for top bracing as you will most likely have some deflection and the wood is going to weather. Source a 21' ( or 2 sticks of 10' and a connector) piece of chain link fence top rail and cut it to fit. A home box store will have the 10' sticks outside with the fencing. If you wish to have a one piece solution, you will have to go to a fencing supplier for the 21 footer. There are any number of ways to attach it between posts. The top rail is what is used on the DIY stands and it works well. Won't rot and possibly come down on your head.

I guess it would depend on the hammock you plan to use. For most gathered end hammocks, I figure 12 to 14 feet (not sure if you would be using a tarp or not; if so, then plan the distance for the tarp) and for most bridge hammocks, probably 14 to maybe 15 feet. I need at least 12 feet for my bridge hammock just to get it hanging properly for comfort and 14 feet is perfect.

So I'm sitting here on Sat morning drinking coffee and watching guys on YouTube put posts in the ground. Ran across a product called Oz Post. It's basically a spike that you drive into the ground and then attack your post of choice to the top. This type of product has probably been around for awhile, so but I'm just seeing it.

Was thinking of a no dig solution to ease the install of posts. A top brace would still be required and I would be concerned with lateral forces at the 6x6 / Oz Post connection.

    Anyone used one of these?

Look like the T6850 will fit 6x6. 20 to 25 bucks wouldn't be bad.

double checked, yeah, 125 a case

but even looking at them, I' not sure I'd trust them to hang a 200lbs hammock'er?

My experiences with anything just stuck in the ground is that it wobbles loose over time, of course this can happen with cement footings to if they're not big enough. And fence post don't have much lateral force on them, it's all vertical. After looking at the pictures of Oz post brackets I really think they would loosen up quite quickly.
By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...

I agree, but it would be fun to test. Wonder if they would donate a few.

Google hammock hang calculator and double check your measurements once you pick a spot and make sure you use pressure treated wood otherwise you will be replacing it within 2 years.
You'll want the thin sides pointing toward the hammock, not the thick sides. Looking down your suspension lines, you should be looking directly at the 4" sides. The strength of a board or post is when it's on its edge, like with floor joists or roof trusses in a house. For the price, I would just go with 6x6 anyway.
