Indeed, the plausibility of this observer effect, in theory, has led me to postulate that it was most likely a wayward Louisiana native born Pan-tha-dilla being your shoe mover. While in it's normal home range, the panthadilla species, typically only steals one sock from the dryer. But after long journeys, will revert to midnight shoe moving.
I know it's not the lightest gear, and it's a lot of stuff, but I use a canoe, so it's a lot like car camping, but without the other cars.

There should not be black widows in Michigan! Are there really??? I have always relied on never having to deal with them here!

Faeries. They're always the little tricksters, and leave no footprints.

    Strangest thing...

I came up with a simple solution under the tarp and on the hammock. I put a few of these on the ridge line.

These are ID Badge Clips I use them to clip my Dutchwaregear lights to the edge of my tarp and anything else that needs to be raised off the ground. They work through the laces of boots and sneakers. When using for my festive lights I clip the end to the tarp and use the snap portion over the wires of my light strand

So obvious. You are hanging your hammock from at least 1 Ent (Walking trees from Lord of the Rings). Shoes remained where you placed them but your tree moved.

Where did you hang, Jellyfish? I'd like to have that shoe washing service because my shoes smell like very very old cheese. LOL

Here in Germany foxes love to steal shoes. That's why I usually tie the shoe laces together and hang them over the ridgeline. It's better to use a slippery hitch or a carabiner, because you don't want to fiddle in the middle of the night if you have to visit the toilet.

New development: this morning I only had one shoe.

At first I was like "what!!!", but then I figured out that today's missing shoe results from a puppy dog. She also stole both of my niece's shoes after she climbed in my hammock for some early morning cuddle time.

This dog was not around yesterday morning, so I still have no new evidence on yesterday.

This weekend I'm in Asheville, NC.
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

This story is pretty fun -- good luck figuring this out!

How is your niece liking hammocks? Her first time, right?

If not your UQ, critters. I have had them moved and have had food stuffed in my boots, especially at State Parks where the fat squirrels on a free ride live.
