    Hello from Louisiana

Hello all, old "new" guy here from Louisiana.

I used to canoe and tent camp many years ago, and more recently car camped on hunting trips using cots and family sized tents. I'm thinking about getting back into hiking and backpacking, but it makes my old bones ache just thinking about being wedged in a backpacking tent and sleeping on the ground, so here I am.

I joined about a month ago and have been lurking pretty much daily ever since, trying to learn all I could about hammocking, but I didn't realize how much I didn't know about it until I started learning about it (that made more sense when I said it in my head).

Anyway, I have been impressed with the wealth of knowledge on this site, and the readiness to share it with others. I look forward to taking part in the discussions when I feel like I have something to add, but in the meantime I hope I don't try anyone's patience with my questions.

    All the best,
    Alkali

Welcome. You won't try anyones patience with questions, but you may get overwhelmed with all the variables and choices, that come back to to you as answers.
Just take it all in, use what you like, and enjoy. Getting the "old bones off the ground" is a wonderful way to get back to enjoying getting out.
Still do any canoeing? I find it to be a great way to find truly exceptional places to hang.
I know it's not the lightest gear, and it's a lot of stuff, but I use a canoe, so it's a lot like car camping, but without the other cars.

@nsdemon. Thanks for the invite but as of now I don't have anything to hang in. I'm hoping to. Remedy that soon.

@boatstall. It's been many many years since I have been canoeing. My friend had a 17 ft Grumman that we would go in. We caught the bug after Deliverence came out, so that tells you how long ago it was.

Not having anything to hang in is perfect for attending the hang. Show up, even if only for the day. Introduce yourself, and enjoy watching everybody there try and convince you that their choice of gear is what you should start with. It would be a great day of looking and talking hammock gear. Sort of a "show and tell" session. Even if only a day trip, you would learn more than a couple of months of sorting through posts here. Bring a chair and an ice chest, and play sponge. Heck, somebody might have brought an extra set of gear. Be warned though, you might want to bring your own bowl and spoon. These folks aren't packing dehydrated groceries.
