    CA > San Diego > 24-26 March hiking/camping options

    Hello all!

Found an opportunity to do some light hiking and camping. Just looking for some inputs from locals or those 'in the know' for a decent area. Ideally we are looking to keep the drive under 3hrs (one way) and not too crowded. Having the campsite near the car would be nice, but not critical.

My wife expressed interest in doing some hiking/camping outings (yay!), so this gives me a chance to break out the hammocks.

Any help and insights you can provide will be very much appreciated.

Some of the county campgrounds do not allow hammocks, or anything hung from trees. Dos Picos is just one otherwise great campground. It can still be cold in the mountains, but Palomar Mountain is one of my favorites. Weather might be awesome, or this year it might snow.

Cuyamaca and Laguna mountains are a little higher and have options. Idyllwild on the west side of San Jacinto is another jewel. Check the weather first. None of these will be crowded.

We hammocked at Dixon Lake campground in Escondido recently. Only downside is no wood fires.
In general no wood fires outside of campground fire rings. Not clear if the wet season will change that. It hasn't yet.

If you want to hike in a little, the PCT runs through the length of the county and there is a lot of water for a change.
