    Kayaking Laurel River Lake (KY)

    2/24 - 2/26/17

I dropped the kids off at school and headed to Laurel River Lake. The weather forecast looked like it should be a good weekend, but a little windy and some rain overnight. One lesson learned on this trip, wind really matters when you are paddling. I never really paid too much attention from a backpacking point of view.

Beautiful day, but launching into the wind had waves breaking over the bow of the kayak. Once I got out of the wind, I was able to enjoy the day.

Here is me enjoying the day even more

I found a good campsite with potential sunset views

And then the stars came out

The next morning it was very windy

I ended up putting in at the boat in campground and doing some hiking

and then setup camp and waited for the sunset and stars

The sunset was not that impressive, but the stars were really nice

Woke up the next morning to sunny and no wind, an easy paddle back to the boatramp.

A great couple of days, more pics and a lot more detail here https://backpackandbeer.blogspot.com...iver-lake.html

I got an Aquaglide inflatable kayak in the fall, so far pretty happy with it. I suspect a hard sided kayak would perform better, but the good ones are expensive and take up space. Here is a review of the one I got, from the place I got it from. https://airkayaks.wordpress.com/2015...-1-3-paddlers/

Looks to be about 1.5-2 hours from me (Knoxville) and an awesome paddle, especially the stars. At least from the i75 side. What area did you put in? Lot of camping spots? If you are game to try it again I have a pair of sea kayaks if you wanted to try one out.

There are boat ramps all around the lake, some are free and some have a day use charge, all are run by the National Forest. I put in at Craigs Creek on the north side.

My impression is the lake is pretty popular in the summer time, there are lots of campsites, but as I mentioned in the blog post, a lot of the sites are trashed enough that I would not use them. There also appears to be a rule about camping within 300 feet of the shore, but all of the sites I saw were much closer to the water than that. There are also 2 boat in campgrounds (picnic tables, privys, tent pads,...) that have fees.

Here is a map of the lake with ramp locations https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE...prd3828797.pdf

I might take you up on the kayak offer

Nice pics. Looked like a good time. If you look around you can find kayaks pretty cheap secondhand. I have a Jackson Journey that's 14 ft. long that I love. It's my final upgrade in the kayak world. I bought my boys Wilderness System Pungos. 9 ft. I believe. Hard to flip those babies. I have even seen a few at yard sales. Good luck.
