    How to hang my tarp

Hi I think after asking this question, I'll be busted as a total newbie Lol

I have a nylon 8 X 10 back packers tarp that I plan to use until I get something fancier.

I'm wondering if you can advise me on how I should hang it? It has grommets in each corner plus an additional two grommets on each side. The spacing is weird -at least for me - cause each side is spaced for 5 holes but the middle hole is not there. This puzzles me because the tarp does not seem well suited for an A frame above my hammock or if I go to ground.

What is the best way to use a trap over my hammock and how is it done with my grommet set up?

    Special thanks in advance.

Assymetric diamond with 13' ridgeline. 10 ' ridgeline too short, you would get wet.

Thanks, everyone. That totally makes sense with the hammock.

I think symmetrical would be better for the ground...those backpacker's that this tarp is designed for...is there a reason why they don't require a grommet at the center of the sides?

A lot will pitch it on the ground not as an A frame but more of a lean to with a peak if that makes sense. So complete coverage on one side but a short porch on the other and obviously open on the ends. That pitch doesn't require any connection in the centre of the tarp edge.

I'd try a larger tarp--my tarp is oversized at 13 foot ridge line by 12 wide. Check with cottage vendors more tarp offerings-they will be sized right and most cottage vendors can advise you on your choices. Maybe look at old man winter at WildernessLogics and also Superfly--I forgot who makes Superfly. I think these tarps or tarps like these will give you better coverage in ☔️ rain. Good luck--lots of choices. There are other equally great vendors--like HammockGear. Lots of great choices.

I'd buy a cheap 10'x10' or 10x12 or 12x12 blue plastic tarp from a hardware store before I'd try and stay covered with a 8 X 10 back packers tarp.

Now I'm worried than an 8x10 won't cut it.

I have the rain fly from an old 10 man dome tent. It is too irregular shaped to use as a tarp over my hammock but I have successfully rigged it as a snakeskin that goes around me, my hammock and the Ridge line.

I supposed I'll keep it close by just in case.

Eventually, I want to buy or making something more specific. Already reading the threads on this forum.

You could make it in an afternoon. No ridgeline to sew. Just cut to length, hem and attach tie outs
