    Boy Scout Council Hammock Guidlines/Rules

    folks,

my son is in cub scouts and one of our camps that we go to does not allow hammocks. the camp ranger has asked me to propose a council-wide standard hammock guidelines or process to the council so that he can then refer to those rules/guidelines when telling campers the campground rules for hammocks.

does anyone's BSA council have hammock guidelines published that i could use as a starting point? i know there are plenty of articles and guidelines and rules out there, but i feel that if they specifically came from another council, it would be easier to get them adopted at our council.

    thanks,

    john

I am a scoutmaster for a special needs boy scout troop. We hammock camp all the time. I have even got rid of my bed & sleep indoors with a hammock. I am not sure about hammock rules. Each council is different. Also it depends on location rules. Different parks, camp sites, and or scout camps have different rules.

I was at a national park with my scouts and they wouldn't let us hang our hammocks on certain trees, and if we if did hang, there had to be a separation from the straps against the bark.

Find out what the specific reasons against the hammocks. Then see if you can do a presentation to those who are in charge.

My council has no problems with hammock camping. I have done several hammock camping seminars for our council. It helped a lot with other hammock campers so they would practice safe practices.

The BSA National has a posted list of "Safety Points". I would think that the council would be able to just use the already established list from national. That is what our council does.

The document also has a couple of additional links at the bottom.

I encourage our boys to hang and to learn something other than how to be miserable on the ground. Last year we made 25 hammocks in our troop and we give every new boy the same chance if they want.

reading through that, though, i wonder if myog hammocks and myog suspension is prohibited... from this line: "Use only the manufacturer’s replacement ropes."

We teach them correct principles and methods for MYOG. My son has supported himself to the last 3 scout camps and purchased a lot of his own gear by making and selling hammocks/whoopie-slings/CL locally. I guess that makes him the manufacturer.

These really are safety points and guidelines. I have seen a lot of crap from some "manufactures" (HF Cottage vendors excluded) that I would never trust in a hang. I would hang in any of my scouts' hammocks.

    Good luck!

yes... i certainly understand in principle... it is just that sometimes the letter of the rule is what is interpreted instead of the intent... i'd hate to get to a camp and have them want to inspect my hammock for manufacturer's specifications...
